Japan Accelerates AI Infrastructure Ambitions with Next-Generation All-Photonics Networks
ACCESS Co., Ltd. has secured a contract from Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) to lead a research project focused on deploying all-photonics network (APN) technologies in overseas AI data centers. Working alongside its U.S.-based subsidiary IP Infusion, the company will evaluate three key AI data center use cases: external connectivity, internal networking, and distributed AI infrastructure. APNs use end-to-end optical transmission to deliver massive bandwidth, ultra-low latency, and lower power consumption while reducing reliance on electronic processing. The initiative supports Japan’s strategy to expand its presence in the global AI infrastructure market, promote open networking, reduce vendor lock-in, diversify supply chains, and accelerate adoption of next-generation optical networking technologies worldwide.
Battle Over Italy’s Telecom Backbone: TIM Takes FiberCop to Court Over Rising Network Costs
Telecom Italia (TIM) has filed a legal complaint in a Milan court against KKR-backed FiberCop over newly introduced tariffs for access to Italy’s fixed-line network, escalating tensions following TIM’s 2024 sale of the infrastructure. The dispute centers on revised pricing rules that TIM argues violate the original agreement and could add tens of millions of euros in annual costs as the company pays to use the network it once owned. FiberCop implemented the changes after Italy’s telecom regulator AGCOM reclassified it as a wholesale-only operator, granting greater flexibility in setting prices. A first court hearing is expected in early July, while FiberCop maintains that its actions comply with regulatory requirements and contractual obligations.
Pakistan Throws Open Telecom Market to New Entrants with MVNO Licence Drive
Pakistan is taking a major step to increase competition in its telecom sector after the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) invited applications for Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) licences. The new framework allows companies to provide mobile services under their own brands by leasing network capacity from existing operators instead of investing in costly infrastructure and spectrum. Nationwide licences will be valid for 15 years and require an upfront fee of $140,000. The move is expected to attract fintech firms, internet service providers, and digital businesses seeking affordable entry into the mobile market. PTA’s framework also includes consumer protection, data privacy, service quality standards, and mobile number portability, creating a more competitive and consumer-friendly telecom environment.
