state run BSNL has introduced WiMax services in Chikkaballapur district of
Karnataka in a bid to enhance and extend broadband internet services to rural
areas.
People
residing in rural areas, organisations and those houses that are located near
National Highways can easily avail internet services without the cable,” said
BSNL Sub Zone officer Sudarshan Poojar.
BSNL
can offer wireless connectivity for a 15-km line of sight range in rural areas
at speeds ranging between 256 Kbps and 2 Mbps. Unlike the limited access area
that a Wi-Fi hotspot serves, WiMAX represents 4G wireless broadband technology
that can link up larger areas, according to an article in Deccan Herald.
The
use of cable to access internet services is completely ruled out. To avail Wi
Max services one needs to install an antenna. Government officers, schools,
colleges and private institutions too can avail the Wi Max services.
The
consumers instead of buying a modem need to a buy an antenna for Rs 2,500.
Moreover, the amount can be paid in installments of Rs 500 every month, said T
H Channakrishnappa, assistant general manager.
The WiMax service will later be extended to Chintamani, Gowribidanur,
Shidlaghatta, Bagepalli and Gudibande. In the first phase services will be
provided to as many as 200 consumers.
Recently, BSNL Chennai Telephones launched WiMAX, the fourth generation technology
for wireless broadband, in 15 mofussil areas around Chennai as part of delivering
its DataOne services to locations which are difficult to network with the
conventional cables.
