Picocom Partners with Wave Electronics to Deploy Next-Generation 5G Base Station Equipment

Picocom, a provider of 5G Open RAN baseband semiconductor and software solutions, has forged a partnership with Wave Electronics, a developer and manufacturer of 5G base station equipment.
Wave and PicocomThis collaboration sees Wave Electronics integrating Picocom’s PC802 system-on-chip (SoC) into its Open RAN product, the WEH47-TM24B radio unit (O-RU).

Picocom and Wave Electronics are set to unveil the deployment-ready O-RU at the Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2024 (26-29 February 2024) through a live end-to-end demonstration.

Wave Electronics has demonstrated its confidence in Picocom’s offerings by committing to leverage the PC805, Picocom’s recently introduced SoC designed for 5G small cell Open RAN radio units. This decision underscores Wave Electronics’ forward-looking approach, as it plans to incorporate the PC805 into its next generation of Open RAN products, slated for release later in 2024.

YJ Lee, CEO of Wave Electronics, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, emphasizing the extensive groundwork undertaken in partnership with Picocom. Lee highlighted the successful optimization and proof-of-concept of the PC802-based O-RU equipment, including interoperability and certification testing with a Korean private 5G network operator.

Additionally, Wave Electronics is integrating Picocom’s latest PC805 device into its future product lineup, indicative of the company’s commitment to leveraging state-of-the-art technology to meet evolving market demands.

Peter Claydon, President of Picocom, commended Wave Electronics on their achievements, stating his excitement about showcasing the new O-RU featuring the PC802 device at MWC 2024. Claydon also affirmed Wave Electronics’ decision to transition seamlessly to the PC805, emphasizing the enhanced capabilities it offers for in-building and outdoor applications.

Looking ahead, YJ Lee outlined Wave Electronics’ ambitious plans to commence deployments within Korea’s private 5G market in the current year, with further expansion into global markets such as CBRS, in-building, and outdoor O-RU markets.

Wave Electronics has achieved significant milestones, including the development and completion of Fronthaul Multiplexer (FHM) certification, enhancing its ability to offer economically viable network configuration solutions to customers worldwide.
