OKI provides GE-PON Optical Access System to Tanah Datar municipality of Indonesia

Telecom Lead Asia: OF Networks, an OKI group company that
provides broadband network solutions in Japan announced that it has
successfully delivered GE-PON for optical LAN system to Tanah Datar, West
Sumatra, Indonesia, with the assistance of Telecommunication Technology
Committee (TTC).

The deployment of high-quality 1Gbps optical LAN will
contribute to resolving the digital divide in rural area and improving the
administrative work environment in Tanah Datar prefectural government.

The local government officials aim to realize various
applications on the optical LAN infrastructure and resolve various problems in
health care, fishing, and agriculture industries through the utilization of
ICT.

The company said that it has obtained GE-PON’s product
certification issued by Post and Telecommunication of Indonesia (POSTEL) for
the first time as a Japanese PON manufacture before the delivery.

This certification is required for selling and promoting
telecommunication devices within the country.

In recent years, Indonesia has tried to improve ICT to
bridge the digital divide between cities and rural areas, which resulted from a
rapid economic growth. Furthermore, the Indonesian government and each
municipality have taken various actions to improve the situation.

Tanah Datar prefectural government focused not only the
equal access to information but also the effective administrative procedures
within the government work.

In 2009, TTC and OFN, in collaboration with the Ministry
of Communication and Information Technology started building an optical LAN
using GE-PON in Tanah Datar and conducted experimental trials of optical
access.

The trials helped improve the municipality’s financial
Information system (also known as SIMDA) OFN also promoted the solutions using
ICT.

After the successful delivery of GE-PON Optical Access
System, OFN further plans to actively pursue further implementation of GE-PON
system in other municipalities, telecommunication operators, high rise
apartments in urban areas, and industrial parks with rapid growth in business.
