NTT America Picks Vigilent intelligent energy management systems to improve energy efficiency of its data centers

Vigilent, , a provider in intelligent
energy management systems, announced that NTT America, NTT Worldwide
Telecommunications, and NTT Facilities USA, selected  Vigilent as NTT America’s energy management
partner.

At the Sterling Data Center in Sterling,
Virginia and the San Jose Data Center in San Jose, California, NTT America will
reduce electricity consumption by over 7.6 million kWh and carbon emissions by
over 10 million lbs. a year, saving the company a projected $630,000 annually
in energy costs.

As part of several broad energy efficiency
initiatives undertaken company-wide, NTT America continually monitors
advancements in energy conservation technologies.

NTT America identified
potential indirect financial benefits totaling $210,000 annually. These
benefits, attributed to using Vigilent technology, were derived from reduced
maintenance costs, increased cooling capacity, improved thermal management and
deferred capital expenditures.

“We recognize the importance of reducing
the amount of energy required to cool the data centers NTT America operates.
Equally important is our enterprise customers’ interest in, and support of,
energy efficiency both from the environmental and cost reduction avenues. As a
key driver for the future of the data center, NTT America will continue to
evaluate, support and deploy technologies that can be environmentally sound and
cost effective for our customers,” said Kazuhiro Gomi, president and CEO of NTT
America.

The Vigilent system was chosen based on
delivery of significant energy savings and operational benefits, which include
uptime protection through load balancing of cooling resources, improved thermal
stability and a reduction in the number of hot and cold spots throughout the
data center.

The deployments at the two data centers
encompassed 178 DX and chilled-water CRACs (Computer Room Air Conditioners),
and in total more than 3,000 racks of servers, within 135,000 sq. ft. of floor
space.

The Vigilent system
is able to deliver cost saving benefits through dynamic, automated control of
extremely complex cooling environments utilizing advanced, artificial
intelligence technology.

The system employs a wireless mesh network
of sensors which provide real-time feedback from tens to thousands of data
points throughout the data center to an artificial intelligence engine. The
engine incorporates this data, along with thousands of other variables, to
dynamically and continually adjust air cooling and flow equipment for maximum
efficiency in alignment with changing IT loads, within pre-specified environmental
parameters.

“Our joint efforts at NTT America’s
Sterling and San Jose facilities have provided a solid foundation upon which we
plan to expand our partnership efforts on a worldwide basis, including an
immediate push into the rapidly-growing data center markets throughout Asia,”
said Mark Housley, CEO of Vigilent.

NTT America recently announced the
company has selected SecureCloud from Trend Micro to provide data protection
for enterprise customers using NTT America’s private cloud computing platform.

Using encryption with policy-based key
management and unique server validation, SecureCloud is designed to protect
sensitive data stored in NTT America’s cloud computing platforms. This
protection is also available for hybrid cloud environments which utilize NTT
America’s private cloud.
