His main challenge will be to ensure the conducting of 5G spectrum auction within the next few months as financially-weak telecom operators are eager to launch 5G services in select towns.

Rajaraman would take over the new role following Anshu Prakash’s superannuation on September 30, 2021.

His appointment in the telecom department comes just days after the government unveiled a relief package for the telecom sector.

K Rajaraman was the Additional Secretary in Finance Ministry. Prior to joining as Additional Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance in 2018, Rajaraman also served as a Joint Secretary in Finance Ministry.
