Ericsson has signed a 5G contract with Chunghwa Telecom, the #1 telecom service provider in Taiwan, to modernize its network.
The new contract covers a range of Ericsson 5G RAN solutions, including remote radios like the dual-band Radio 4490HP, which offers 54 percent reduction in embodied carbon footprint and over 40 percent lower energy usage compared to legacy products. The new radios enhance multi-band capacity, uplink performance, and energy efficiency.
Chunghwa Telecom’s 5G network reaches 97.6 percent of the country’s locations. Taiwan’s 5G network has achieved download speed of up to 265.35 Mbps DUring the third-quarter of 2023, according to a report from Ookla.
“Ericsson’s 5G solutions align with our commitment to reducing carbon emissions and enhancing network efficiency,” said Chung Yung Chia, Vice President of Network Technology Group at Chunghwa Telecom.
Chunghwa Telecom aims at achieving new Net Zero targets of 2045, which was validated by SBTi.
Chunghwa Telecom, which competes with Taiwan and FarEasTone for adding mobile subscribers in Taiwan, will gain from the deployment of Ericsson AI Intelligent RAN power saving.
Ericsson, which competes with Nokia, Huawei and ZTE for building telecom network in Taiwan, says its Service Continuity offering uses advanced AI and machine learning technologies to reduce energy consumption without impacting network performance. This AI-driven solution automates the monitoring and optimization of complex networks to predict network load and optimize energy efficiency.
Ericsson’s Site Digital Twin is an important component of this modernization contract, offering enhanced digital engineering and asset lifecycle management based on open standards. Ericsson said this solution provides enriched digital twin of the site and network, facilitating faster and more automated design and deployment.

At the Mobile World Congress 2024 in Barcelona, Chunghwa Telecom and Ericsson committed to advancing 5G-Advanced technology with a focus on AI-driven energy savings, intelligent network operations and automation.
