Vodafone Idea shares rise as government considers relief on AGR dues
Vodafone Idea’s shares increased by 5 percent following reports that the Indian government is considering possible relief on the company’s ₹84,000 crore Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues. According to government officials, discussions are ongoing regarding potential options for easing the debt burden, including revaluation of dues under the Supreme Court-approved framework. Vodafone Idea’s total gross debt stands at around ₹2.1 lakh crore, including AGR liabilities and spectrum-related payments. The company had earlier opted for conversion of interest on dues into equity, making the government the largest shareholder with 33 percent stake. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is evaluating financial viability, including possibilities for staggered payments or partial waivers, though no final decision has been made. The development follows Vodafone Idea’s ongoing efforts to secure funding from external investors to support network expansion and 5G rollout, which remains pending. No official confirmation has been issued regarding the timeline or structure of the proposed relief.
BSNL installs 84,000 new 4G towers to expand network coverage
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has installed 84,000 new 4G towers nationwide to enhance network coverage and quality of service. The deployment is part of BSNL’s network modernization strategy under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, utilizing indigenous telecom infrastructure supplied by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Tejas Networks. BSNL aims to expand 4G connectivity in urban and rural areas before a planned 5G rollout in 2025. The deployment supports BSNL’s goal to improve service reach and reduce dependence on imported telecom equipment. Additionally, BSNL has introduced new recharge plans with bundled data and unlimited calling options to attract prepaid users. The 4G rollout is funded through government-approved investment, including a ₹1.64 lakh crore revival package announced in 2022. The company is targeting improved network competitiveness in the telecom market, especially in underserved regions. Implementation is being carried out in coordination with C-DoT and other state-backed telecom partners.
