Ciena inks submarine deal with Japan-U.S. Cable Network

Ciena announced its network deal with the Japan-U.S. Cable Network to expand submarine network with nearly 22,000 km.

The submarine network, which will be offering connectivity from Japan to the U.S., will utilize Ciena’s GeoMesh submarine solution and the latest WaveLogic programmable coherent optical technology to increase the capacity of the network.

In 2012, Japan-U.S. Cable Network, which has service providers such as CenturyLink, KDDI, NTT Communications, SoftBank Telecom and Verizon, among others, as consortium members, used Ciena’s coherent solution for a major upgrade and 100G deployment.

Japan-U.S. Cable Network will utilize Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform, WaveLogic 3 8D-2QAM modulation capability and Flexible Grid technology to achieve a 60 percent or more increase in the design capacity of the longest trans-Pacific segment.

The Japan-U.S. Cable Network will also utilize Ciena’s 200G 16QAM modulation on the shortest segments to double the capacity per wavelength and realize savings in equipment cost, power consumption and space requirements.

This upgrade follows a 200G trial completed in February 2014, said Ciena.
