Broadcom and SK Telecom launch world’s first 5G Wi-Fi hotspot router

Telecom Lead Asia: Broadcom and SK Telecom have announced the launch of 5G Wi-Fi hotspot router.

Main benefits of the world’s first 5G Wi-Fi hotspot router include significant range, capacity and power advantages, said Broadcom in a statement.

With more than 26 million telecommunications subscribers, SK Telecom can alleviate cellular spectrum crunch by offloading data traffic to Wi-Fi networks.

Broadcom’s 5G Wi-Fi offers three times faster and up to six times more power efficiency than previous generations of Wi-Fi.

Products powered by 5G Wi-Fi provide broader coverage and allow consumers to experience faster video streaming and connect multiple devices simultaneously and extended battery life.

Broadcom’s TurboQAM technology implements the highest data-rate 256-QAM mode in 2.4 GHz for faster throughputs. The new Wi-Fi router will assist SK Telecom to improve its revenue this year from KRW 16.301 trillion in 2012.

Advanced beamforming, Low-Density Parity Check (LDPC) code and Space-Time Block Code (STBC) support for better coverage and more reliable connectivity.

By integrating Broadcom’s BCM4708 and BCM4360 into its newest platform, SK Telecom will ensure reliable connectivity to its customers by offloading data traffic to an IP network via 5G Wi-Fi connection.

Choi Jin-sung, executive vice president and head of ICT R&D Division, SK Telecom, said: “By partnering with Broadcom, SK Telecom will provide an upgraded Wi-Fi experience for customers.”
