The worldwide Service Provider Router market grew by 26 percent in the second quarter of 2011 due to strong demand from the North American and Asia Pacific regions, according to Dell’Oro Group.
Equipment vendor Alcatel-Lucent is leading the mobile backhaul, and Huawei is doing very well in its home China market, Cisco and Juniper to pursue these opportunities as well.
Mobile backhaul projects in the United States and fiber optic broadband initiatives in China as the underlying drivers of the market growth.
“Mobile backhaul has been a key market driver for several quarters, but this was the first quarter where we saw a substantial effect from the China broadband upgrade,” said Shin Umeda, vice president at Dell’Oro Group.
Recently, IDC reported that the worldwide Ethernet switch market experienced a year-over-year decline of 1.6 percent in the second quarter of 2011 (2Q11), while the worldwide Router market continued with its trajectory of continued growth with a 14.5 percent year over year increase,
The preliminary results show the ethernet switch market moderating after an exceptional recovery in the previous year, while the router market continued to grow especially in North America.
