Top 10 semiconductor vendors by revenue in 2014 include Intel, Samsung, Qualcomm, etc., said Gartner.

The #1 semiconductor maker Intel had revenues of $50.84 billion in 2014 with 15 percent share of the global market against 16.5 percent in 2011.

Samsung was in the second position with 10.4 percent with annual revenues of $35.27 billion.

Qualcomm had $19.19 billion revenue from semiconductors and its share in 2014 was 5.6 percent.

Worldwide semiconductor revenue rose 7.9 percent to $339.8 billion in 2014. Top 25 semiconductor vendors’ combined revenue increased 11.7 percent. The top 25 vendors accounted for 72.1 percent of total market revenue against 69.7 percent in 2013.

The global semiconductor market has seen several merger and acquisition activities last year.

Avago Technologies’ acquisition of LSI, MStar Semiconductor merger with MediaTek, and ON Semiconductor’s acquisition of Aptina Imaging were some of the most significant deals. Infineon Technologies’ bid for International Rectifier has yet to be completed.

Traditional PC sector’s return to production growth, after a 10.1 percent decline in 2013, was yet another key development. The smartphone production growth was around 34 percent against 39.5 percent in 2013. Tablet production experienced a sharp slowdown, said Gartner.

Intel’s semiconductor revenue grew 4.6 percent in 2014, following two years of revenue decline.

The company reorganized itself into five new business units in 2014, with the Datacenter Group continuing to be the most the stable unit for the company. Intel is on pace to reach its goal of 40 million tablet processors in 2014, though Intel is shipping these processors at discounted prices with incentives.

On the PC front, Intel gained market share from AMD. Gartner expects volume increases for both Intel’s notebook and desktop platforms compared with 2013.
