MWC 2014: Wilocity adds world’s first 802.11ad Wi-Fi chipset

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014, Wilocity today announced the Wil6300 chipset, the world’s first 802.11ad, multi-gigabit Wi-Fi chipset for mobile phones.

The new chipset will give phone users 4.6 Gbps interference-free bandwidth, over 10 times faster than current best-of-breed mobile Wi-Fi, and greatly improve network capacity, said Wilocity in a statement.

Wilocity, the first company to ship 802.11ad products to the PC market, has shipped more than a million units since introduction in February, 2013.

Juniper Research has recently estimated that 60 percent of mobile phone traffic will be offloaded to Wi-Fi networks by 2017.

802.11ad is the newest generation of Wi-Fi technology and is fully supported by the Wi-Fi Alliance through their WiGig certification program.

To fit nearly 5Gbps into the power and real-estate of mobile platforms, Wilocity developed an advanced 28 nanometer (nm) chipset with significant reduction in power consumption and size, both critical for mobile platforms. Power use is expected in the 200-300 mW range for streaming video and other typical user scenarios, with idle power consumption

The new chipset will be available for sampling in Q3, 2014.
