Apple’s tablet market share dips to 39.6%, Samsung up to 17.9% in Q1 2013

Telecom Lead Asia: Apple’s market share in tablet segment has declined to 39.6 percent in Q1 2013 from 58.1 percent in Q1 2012. Samsung increased tablet market share to 17.9 percent from 11.3 percent.

Microsoft has 1.8 percent market share in tablet space in the first quarter of 2013. It shipped nearly 900,000 units of Surface RT and Surface Pro tablets.

The tablet market rose 142.4 percent, according to IDC, with shipments of 49.2 million units.

Growth drivers include the increased market demand for smaller screen devices.

Apple shipped 19.5 million units against Samsung’s 8.8 million.

Samsung has used its recent Android smartphone growth to help bring its tablet product line into new markets and channels, leveraging the opportunity to package and bundle.

ASUS shipped 2.7 million tablets and took third position. It sees demand from Nexus 7 device.

Amazon fell to the number 4 position, once again the victim of a highly seasonal product cycle.

According to IDC, Microsoft it is widening its regional distribution of both Surface RT and Surface Pro products. Beyond the Surface products, Windows 8 and Windows RT tablets continued to struggle to gain traction in the market. Total combined Windows 8 and Windows RT shipments across all vendors reached 1.8 million units.

The market is moving toward smart 7-8 inch devices, but Microsoft’s larger challenges center around consumer messaging and lower cost competition. If these challenges are addressed, along with the desired screen size variations, Microsoft can make further headway in 2013 and beyond.
