India’s smartphone market declined by 5.5 percent in Q1 2025, shipping 32 million units amid weak consumer demand and surplus inventory, marking the second consecutive quarter of decline.

“The first two months of the year saw fewer launches with brands focusing on offering retail support, discounts and price drops on older models to clear inventory. However, new launches picked up in March across price segments with enhanced marketing activities to drive demand,” said Aditya Rampal, senior market analyst, Devices Research, IDC Asia Pacific.

The IDC report said ASPs reached a record US$274, up 4 percent, with the premium segment (US$600<US$800) growing by 78.6 percent and the mid-premium segment (US$400<US$600) by 74 percent.

The share of 5G smartphones rose to 88 percent of total shipments, with ASPs falling by 11 percent to US$300, and the low-end 5G segment under US$100 reaching 7 percent.

Qualcomm-based shipments grew by 40.8 percent.

MediaTek’s share declined to 43.6 percent.

Offline channel shipments increased by 10 percent, reaching a 58.1 percent share, while online channel shipments dropped by 21.1 percent to 41.9 percent.

In Q1 2025, Vivo led India’s smartphone market with a 19.7 percent share, up from 16.2 percent in Q1 2024, followed by Samsung at 16.4 percent, a slight increase from 15.6 percent.

OPPO ranked third with a 12 percent share, up from 10.2 percent.

Realme secured the fourth position at 10.6 percent, up from 9.8 percent.

Apple’s share rose significantly to 9.5 percent from 7.3 percent, driven by strong iPhone 16 shipments.

Xiaomi dropped to 7.8 percent from 12.8 percent, marking a notable decline.

Motorola gained traction with a rise to 7.5 percent from 4.6 percent.

Poco’s share fell to 4.3 percent from 5.9 percent.

OnePlus experienced a significant drop to 2.4 percent from 5.1 percent, and iQOO slightly declined to 2.3 percent from 2.8 percent.

Apple achieved the highest growth of 23 percent among the top 5 brands, shipping a record 3 million units driven by the iPhone 16, which accounted for 4 percent of overall shipments.

Realme surpassed Xiaomi for the fourth slot, driven by affordable launches, while Nothing, Google, and Motorola recorded the highest overall growth.

IDC projects low single-digit growth in shipments for 2025, driven by rising ASPs, expanding offline distribution, microfinancing options, and marketing generative AI features. Manufacturing in India is expected to scale up as brands seek to mitigate geopolitical risks.
