Samsung, Foxconn, Flex, Vivo and Oppo are the top five smartphone assembly vendors in the first quarter of 2019, according to the recent IDC report.

The global smartphone ODM / EMS assembly shipment volumes fell 10.2 percent year over year and 16.7 percent quarter on quarter during the first quarter of 2019 with total shipments of 297.3 million.

High inventory both on hand and in the channel, combined with Chinese New Year holiday’s shortened work time, caused global smartphone production to drop in Q1 2019, said Sean Kao, senior research manager with IDC’s Worldwide Smartphone ODM Research Group, in July.

Aside from Huawei, which moved quickly during the quarter to ship products, most component suppliers faced low demand from other first-tier brand vendors in Q1 2019. First-tier ODMs began to prepare and obtain new ODM orders from HMD and Samsung during the quarter.

Meanwhile, the worldwide smartphones shipments declined 2.3 percent year over year and rose 6.5 percent quarter on quarter in the second quarter of 2019 to reach 333.2 million.

Samsung, Huawei, Apple, Xiaomi and Oppo are the top five smartphone companies in the world. Samsung, Huawei, and Apple – each vendor lost a bit of share from last quarter, and Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo – all gained.
