Sony Mobile launches Xperia SP and L range smartphones

Telecom Lead Asia: Sony Mobile Communications, which is focusing on high-end smartphones, has launched Xperia SP and L range.

The two smartphones will be available in global markets in Q2 2013. The company did not share pricing details. The launch is happening at a time when the entire mobile industry is talking about innovations at Samsung Galaxy S4 and the possible innovations from Apple to regain lead in innovations.

Sony Mobile has shipped 9.8 million smartphones in Q4 2012 to take 4th ranking in IDC’s smartphone vendor chart with 4.5 percent market share. During the fourth quarter, Samsung — #1 smartphone player — shipped 63.7 million smartphones.

IDC recently said Sony’s strategy for becoming the worldwide leader in mobile entertainment combined with its growing portfolio of high-end smartphones drove its smartphone volumes higher throughout 2012.

This marks a significant improvement since Sony acquired Ericsson’s stake in 2011 in the Sony Ericsson joint venture. Sony introduced its Xperia TL in Q4 2012 and recently announced the addition of the Xperia Z and the Xperia ZL, to be launched in Q1 2013.

Sony Mobile, announcing the Xperia SP and Xperia L range, said these two smartphones will be available at new price points.

Xperia SP offers better HD experience, LTE 4G and easy connectivity with One-touch function, while Xperia L provides a stylish design with better Sony camera experience for perfect pictures and videos every time.

Calum MacDougall, director of Xperia Marketing at Sony Mobile Communications, said: “Both of our new models benefit from Sony’s innovation and engineering expertise – whether you want to enjoy premium HD quality entertainment over 4G LTE on our mid-range Xperia SP or capture every moment in perfect detail with our more affordable Xperia L.”
