Samsung increases smartphone share to 46 percent

Mobile phone maker Samsung said its market share in the smartphones segment in India increased to 45.9 percent in November 2015 from 35.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2014-15, said Manu Sharma, director for mobiles business at Samsung India Electronics.

Samsung has overall market share of 44 percent across all segments. Samsung with 18 4G devices account for 62 percent market share.

Sharma said that as Indian customers look for value, Samsung with its strong focus on research and development is working on bringing innovations to the market.

“We have 10,000 engineers working to really differentiate our offering in the market by bringing innovations,” he said.

The R&D team is based in Chennai, Bengaluru and Noida. Samsung is manufacturing all mobile phones across all segments, except Gear S2 and Gear VR, in India. The facility at Noida caters to the manufacturing in India.

Samsung’s smartphone range starts from Rs 3,990 to Rs 58,500. The company’s feature phones start at Rs.1,100.

The company was focussing on 4G, which was growing rapidly and consumers were migrating from 2G and 3G.

During Q4 of last year, 60 percent of all smartphone shipments across the industry were 4G. Out of 17 crore smartphone users in India, 14 crore are 4G.

In terms of overall volume, smartphones make up 47 percent while feature phones make up 53 percent. However, in terms of value, smartphones are 85 percent. It is estimated that the value of smartphones sold last year was anywhere between Rs 75,000 crore to Rs 80,000 crore.

Actress Shriya Saran unveiled the 2016 editions of Galaxy A7 and Galaxy A5 priced at Rs 33,400 and Rs 29,400, respectively.
