Phone market share Q1 2014: Samsung 27.7%, Nokia 11.5%, Apple 10.7%, LG 4%, Huawei 3.5%

Strategy Analytics report revealed the mobile phone market share of Samsung at 27.7 percent, Nokia 11.5 percent, Apple 10.7 percent, LG 4 percent and Huawei 3.5 percent in Q1 2014.

Out of these, Samsung, Nokia and LG dropped their mobile phone market share from 28.6 percent, 16.6 percent and 4.3 percent to 27.7 percent, 11.5 percent and 4 percent, respectively.

On the other hand, Apple increased share to 10.7 percent from 10 percent, while Huawei market share expanded to 3.5 percent from 3.1 percent.

Strategy Analytics said global mobile phone shipments grew 9 percent to 408 million units in the first quarter of 2014.

Smartphones accounted for 7 in 10 of mobile phone shipments during the quarter. Demand for 4G and 3G models across Asia, Africa and elsewhere are growth drivers.

Samsung is still shipping more mobile phones worldwide than Apple, LG and Nokia combined.

Strategy Analytics said new owner Microsoft will be looking to Nokia’s upgraded X phone portfolio to stabilize the downturn in the coming months.

Apple has closed the market share gap on Nokia to just one point, and Nokia will have to fight hard to stay ahead in the second half of this year. LG had a mixed quarter, capturing 4 percent share of the global mobile phone market. LG is performing well in Europe, but China and India remain major weak spots that the vendor still needs to address.

Key emerging challengers in mobile phones worldwide include TCL-Alcatel, Coolpad, Lenovo, Xiaomi and others.
