Meta Platforms’ latest social media venture, Threads, has reached a significant milestone, boasting over 175 million monthly active users. CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared the news on Wednesday, just two days before the app’s first anniversary.
In a Threads post, Mark Zuckerberg reflected on the digital platform’s journey, stating, “What a year.” He previously reported in February that the monthly active user count had surpassed 150 million.
Despite this impressive growth, Threads has not disclosed other crucial metrics, such as the daily active user count and average time spent per user, which are key indicators of the app’s overall popularity and engagement.
Threads, positioned as a competitor to Elon Musk’s X (formerly known as Twitter), launched on July 5 last year. X has 556 million subscribers and 40,000 paid subcribers on the social media platform. X does not reveal its financial performance. Industry believes that X is not doing well.
Threads quickly gained traction, amassing 100 million users in less than a week. This rapid adoption was largely due to the seamless integration with Instagram, allowing users to easily create Threads profiles. However, the platform experienced a drop-off in early users after the initial surge, Reuters news report said.
Unlike other Meta platforms, Threads currently does not feature advertising and thus generates minimal revenue for the company. Recently, Threads joined the Fediverse, a network of social media sites supporting the ActivityPub protocol, enabling cross-platform user interactions.
As Threads approaches its first anniversary, its growth suggests it will continue to play a significant role in the social media business, even as it navigates the challenges of maintaining user engagement and monetization.
