Emerging telecom markets — India and Brazil — and rapidly growing mobile user base have powered Facebook’s growth in June 2013.
The social networking giant’s monthly active users (MAUs) rose 21 percent to 1.15 billion in June 2013 against 955 million in the same period a year ago.
Users in India and Brazil represented key sources of growth in the second quarter of 2013 relative to the prior year.
Driven by rapid growth in mobile market such as India, Brazil and other nations, Facebook’s global daily active users (DAUs) rose 27 percent to 699 million on average during June 2013 from 552 million during June 2012.
Facebook experienced growth in DAUs across major markets including Brazil, India, and the U.S.
Facebook earlier said the number of users accessing Facebook via their mobile phones in June rose around 20 percent in the United States and Britain. The group said its mobile monthly active users increased by 18 percent in the United States and by 22 percent in Britain in June compared with the previous year.
As of March 31, 2013, Facebook had 73 million MAUs in Brazil, up 62 percent compared to the same period in 2012.
The user base in India rose 50 percent to 78 million as of March 31, 2013 compared to the same period in 2012.
Powered by surging mobile advertising revenue, Facebook posted a net income of $333 million for the April-June quarter against a loss of $157 million in year-ago period, PTI reported.
Revenue increased 53 percent to $1.81 billion in the second quarter from $1.18 billion in the second quarter of 2012. Its revenue from advertising rose 61 percent to $1.60 billion in the quarter over the year-ago period.
Worldwide mobile MAUs rose 51 percent to 819 million as of June 30, 2013 from 543 million as of June 30, 2012. Facebook’s mobile advertising revenue accounts for 30 percent of its overall ad revenue in the first quarter.
Facebook said in all regions, an increasing number of MAUs are accessing Facebook through mobile devices, with users in India, Brazil, and Indonesia representing key sources of mobile growth over the second quarter of 2013 as compared to the first quarter of 2013.
