FCC Approves Expansion of SpaceX Starlink Network With 7,500 More Satellites

The Federal Communications Commission has approved SpaceX’s request to deploy an additional 7,500 second-generation Starlink satellites, doubling the company’s authorized total to 15,000 satellites worldwide. The approval allows SpaceX to upgrade satellites, operate across five frequency bands, and lift previous restrictions that limited overlapping coverage and network capacity.

According to the FCC, the expanded constellation will support direct-to-cell connectivity outside the United States and provide supplemental coverage domestically, enabling next-generation mobile services and internet speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second. FCC Chair Brendan Carr said the authorization would strengthen competition and expand access to advanced satellite broadband services. SpaceX has sought approval for nearly 30,000 satellites in total, but the FCC said it is approving only 15,000 at this stage.
