China Unicom Warns US Crackdown Could Break Global Internet Links, Says FCC Plan Risks “Network Fracture”

China Unicom’s US unit has cautioned that a proposed US regulatory crackdown on Chinese telecom firms could severely disrupt global communications infrastructure. In a filing to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the company argued that plans to block American carriers from interconnecting with Chinese operators deemed national security risks—such as China Unicom, China Mobile, and China Telecom—would damage US businesses with major ties to China. It warned that such restrictions could “fundamentally fracture” international telecom networks, as Chinese carriers act as key gateways between the world’s two largest economies. The FCC proposal is part of broader US efforts to tighten oversight of foreign telecom infrastructure over security concerns, but industry groups also fear it could reduce network efficiency and weaken global connectivity.

North Africa Digital Leap: Algeria and Tunisia Unite to Boost Telecom Power and Global Connectivity

Algeria and Tunisia have agreed to strengthen cooperation in the telecommunications and ICT sector, focusing on expanding digital infrastructure, improving connectivity, and boosting regional data capacity. The agreement was reached during the fourth session of their Joint Technical Commission on Posts and Telecommunications in Tunis, co-chaired by Algeria’s ICT Minister Sid Ali Zerrouki and Tunisia’s Sofiene Hemiss. A key outcome includes plans for a new submarine cable linking both countries to Italy, aimed at enhancing network resilience and supporting the digital economy. Both sides also discussed improving postal services, digital transformation initiatives, and joint innovation projects.

Zambia Telecom Pushes Ahead with Private 4G/5G Expansion with Ericsson Partnership

Zambia’s incumbent telecom operator has strengthened its push into next-generation connectivity by partnering with Ericsson to deploy private 4G and 5G network solutions for enterprise customers. The collaboration, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding, focuses on building secure, high-performance private networks to support businesses across key sectors such as industry, services, and digital infrastructure. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to accelerate Zambia’s digital transformation by improving network efficiency, reliability, and automation capabilities. Ericsson will contribute global expertise in advanced telecom technologies, enabling tailored enterprise connectivity solutions.

Indonesia’s 5G Leap Forward: Nokia and Indosat Power Up AI-Driven Network Revolution

Nokia and Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison have entered a major partnership to accelerate Indonesia’s 5G expansion while laying the groundwork for AI-powered radio access networks (AI-RAN). Under the agreement, Nokia will deploy advanced low- and mid-band 5G RAN technologies across Indosat’s nationwide infrastructure to improve coverage, capacity, and service quality. The rollout aims to bring low-band 5G across the entire network, while mid-band 5G is expected to reach around 80% coverage within the next three and a half years. The collaboration also advances AI-RAN development with NVIDIA, enabling smarter, more efficient networks capable of supporting future AI-driven applications.
