3GPP wireless technologies pass 5 billion connections

3GPP wireless technologies announced that it passed the 5
billion connection mark in the second quarter of 2011, marking a significant
milestone in the telecommunications and Internet technology industries,
according to 4G Americas based on data from Informa Telecoms & Media.

“Wireless technology infrastructure has become the
road to our future. There are more connections around the world using wireless
mobile devices for voice, entertainment and internet needs than fixed line
telephones, radios, PCs, TVs or any other type of electronic device,” said
Chris Pearson, president of 4G Americas

Analysts and leading industry companies have predicted a
future world of connected devices that could reach up to 50 billion by 2020 —
a world where all things are connected.

Global Subscriber Statistics shows 3GPP Technologies
(GSM, UMTS-HSPA, LTE) have 5.1 Billion Subscriptions with a market share of 89
percent, 3GPP2 Technologies (CDMA, EV-DO) have 543 Million Subscriptions and 10
percent market share while the others (iDEN, TDMA, PDC, TD-SCDMA) only have 56
Million Subscriptions.

“By 2016 there will be more than 7.5 billion 3GPP
subscribers, including more than 661 million subscribers using LTE,” said
Kristin Paulin, Research Analyst- North America & Caribbean, Informa Telecoms & Media.

“There has already been tremendous growth in mobile
broadband, but with widespread LTE we will see this trend explode. We will see
subscribers drawn to applications like video and VoIP that take advantage of
the high-throughput and low-latency features of LTE,” Paulin added.
