The Delhi government will provide 1,000 Wi-Fi hotspot zones in the national capital by the end of this year, Delhi Dialogue Commission (DDC) Vice Chairman Ashish Khetan said said on Friday.

“The government has completed free Wi-Fi project and in its first phase 1,000 Wi-Fi hotspot zones will be developed at 571 pre-identified locations in east Delhi. We plan to activate these hotspot zones by the year end,” Khetan said.

He said that three excess points would be made in every hotspot zone.

“This Wi-Fi project will facilitate people to use high speed internet free of cost. It will be the largest public Wi-Fi project in the world. As many as 120 people would be able to login in every hotspot zone and take benefit of high speed internet,” Khetan told reporters here.

He said that the Delhi government’s IT department is the nodal agency for Wi-Fi project and tender process will be started very soon.

Khetan also said that the government has decided to form a common fiber network so that high speed internet could be taken to every household in Delhi under its ‘Fiber to Home’ project.

“We need common fiber network for improvement in health, education, water and electricity, public transport and safety sectors which is mandatory for developing a city into smart city,” Khetan said. IANS
