Comcast increases Xfinity Internet speed without additional cost in the Northeast

Comcast has increased the speeds of two of its Xfinity Internet packages — up to 105 Mbps speed for Xfinity Internet Blast from the earlier 50 Mbps and 150 Mbps speed for Xfinity Extreme 105 from 105 Mbps — in the Northeast.

The new speed will be available to customers in the majority of Comcast’s Northeast Division, which includes 14 Northeastern states from Maine through Virginia and the District of Columbia, said Comcast in a statement.

To get access to new speed, most customers need to re-start their modems. Some customers may need to upgrade their modems to receive the increased speeds. A list of approved modems can be found online. Customers who lease modems from Comcast will be upgraded at no additional charge, said Comcast.

Meanwhile, Comcast has surpassed one million Wi-Fi hotspots across the nation.

Wi-Fi and mobile-connected devices will generate 68 percent of Internet traffic by 2017, according to a Cisco report. At this pace, it is expected that U.S. consumers will download and upload more data on their smartphones or tablets in 2018 than they did on their laptops in 2013.

Comcast has placed Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots in public locations, ranging from shopping centers and commuter stations to parks, sporting venues, beaches and boardwalks. Cities include San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta as well as areas of New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia and Delaware.

In addition, most Comcast Business Internet customers are eligible to receive an Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspot for no additional charge when they order service at restaurants, cafes and bakeries, retail establishments and office waiting rooms.

Recently, Comcast began providing residential customers with Xfinity Wireless Gateways the ability to have a second xfinitywifi signal (or SSID) in their home that is separate and distinct from their private and secure home Wi-Fi signal.
