Test solutions major Anritsu Corporation today announced its deal to acquire rival Azimuth Systems, a provider of RF performance test solutions.

Financial details were not disclosed. Headquartered in Acton, MA, USA, Azimuth Systems has customers around the world. Following the closure of the deal, Azimuth Systems will become a subsidiary of Anritsu.

The strategy of Anritsu, with the integration of Azimuth’s test products and installed base among telecom companies, is to expand its test solutions, leveraging the strengths of both companies in the growing IoT and 5G markets.

Anritsu is expecting substantial business in IoT and 5G space. It believes that the complexity of 5G broadband wireless will create more demands on radio propagation (data) quality. In addition, the increase expected in the number of IoT devices in the wireless network will increase the need for lab based testing environments.

Technology companies in 5G and IoT will be using the radio propagation technology developed by Azimuth Systems because it is an important part of evaluation and verification in research and development as well as for conformance test for mobile communications.

Pete Paglia, president and CEO of Azimuth Systems, said Azimuth’s radio propagation expertise, as realized in its ACETM MIMO channel emulation portfolio and Field to Lab (FTLTM) solutions, will be highly complementary with Anritsu’s wireless test and measurement product portfolio.

“Anritsu has been expanding its test and measurement business for mobile terminals by integrating fading simulator technology developed internally into its current test solutions for 3G / 4G,” said Hirokazu Hashimoto, CEO of Anritsu Corporation.

In addition to adding intellectual property to Anritsu’s R&D programs, Azimuth’s product expands Anritsu’s addressable market, including the network equipment RF performance test market.
