Lenovo joins hands with Red Hat for cloud data centers for carriers

Lenovo has kick started an initiative to develop powerful integrated solutions specifically for the telecommunications industry that provide the backbone for rich mobile content, 5G networks and IoT workloads.

The company will aid clients to build modern data centers using Open Source technologies in order to meet demands for cost-effective and flexible architectures.

“Joining the project is a true testament of Lenovo’s commitment to open standards and working collaboratively to develop a more robust NFV Infrastructure for the industry as a whole.”

The announcement took place at the Red Hat Summit where the company also revealed plans for Open Platform@Lenovo (OP@L), powered by Red Hat’s software stack for network function virtualization (NFV) functioning on OCP-compliant infrastructure.

Lenovo will also be joining the Open Platform for NFV (OPNFV) project as a Platinum member.

OPNFV uses NFV to build a carrier-grade, integrated Open Source platform developing advanced solutions and services.

Lenovo can now participate in the group’s Board and Technical Steering Committee.

This move will favor Lenovo in becoming a secure and open platform.

Lenovo uses Red Hat, Linux, OpenStack and OPNFV technologies, while already having an Open Compute Platform (OCP) membership.

Lenovo also aims to include open NFV architectures which can be customized and are comparatively secure.

The company also plans to work with Red Hat to develop a certified solution stack based on the latter’s NFV Platform, built on Red Hat OpenStack Platform.

The integration of Red Hat NFV platform with Lenovo’s OP@L is the recent strategy collaboration between the companies,4 announced late last year.

Now, the two companies are joining to develop and deliver open and flexible solutions for service provider clients, as well as those in other industries.

Lenovo already offers Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization and CloudForms software within its portfolio, and published reference architectures and deployment guides for ease in designing and delivery of solutions running on Red Hat software or its infrastructure.
