Internet speeds rise 3.5% to 5.1 Mbps in Q2 2015

The global average Internet connection speed increased 3.5 percent to 5.1 Mbps in the second quarter of 2015, said Akamai Technologies.

The Internet speed report is based on data gathered from the Akamai Intelligent Platform.

The report said Internet speed in South Korea decreased 2.1 percent to 23.1 Mbps from the first quarter.

Internet speed in Japan increased 7.8 percent to 16.4 Mbps.

The growth in Internet speed in Hong Kong was 1.5 percent to 17 Mbps.

Reaching 15.6 Mbps, 4.6 percent was the growth Internet speed in Switzerland.

India does not figure in the top 10 countries for Internet speed.

Average Internet connection speeds among the top 10 countries / regions remained well above 10 Mbps. Six of the 10 had average connection speeds above 15 Mbps.

Global average peak Internet connection speeds increased 12 percent to 32.5 Mbps. Speeds rose in every top 10 country/region except Sweden. In Sweden, growth in peak Internet connection speed was flat at 62.8 Mbps from the first quarter.

Peak Internet connection speed in Singapore grew 12 percent to 108.3 Mbps, rose 0.6 percent in Romania to 72.1 Mbps and increased to 7.8 percent in Macao to 62.6 Mbps.

Eight of the top 10 saw average peak speeds greater than 70 Mbps, while Sweden and Macao saw speeds above 60 Mbps.

Based on traffic data collected by Ericsson, the volume of mobile data traffic grew by 15 percent between the first and second quarters of 2015, and increased 55 percent year-over-year.
