Alcatel-Lucent to enhance mobile backhaul portfolio

Telecom Lead India: To strengthen its presence in mobile broadband business, Alcatel-Lucent is enhancing its mobile backhaul portfolio.

The expanded mobile backhaul will address operator challenges for delivering mobile broadband services in urban environments.

Enhancements to address small cell backhaul help to make small cells a more attractive and viable way to address demand for ubiquitous high-quality mobile broadband.

In order to provide access to the network and transport back to the core for all of these new sites, operators are using diverse range of mobile backhaul methods – optical fiber, copper, microwave, Ethernet – which can make their backhaul networks complex to manage.

Alcatel-Lucent’s new mobile backhaul portfolio offer cost-effective approach to deliver backhaul resources to address massive increases in bandwidth. It will be easier for operators to manage data traffic across all types of backhaul links in a cost-effective way.

“This announcement helps strengthen Alcatel-Lucent’s position as one of the top vendors in the mobile backhaul market,” said Nick Marshall, principal analyst, Mobile Networks at ABI Research.

Alcatel-Lucent claims that the expanded mobile backhaul portfolio leverages its Internet protocol (IP)/multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) capabilities. This approach helps simplify deployment and on-going operations of the backhaul network and reduce mobile operators’ costs.

“The combination of our strengths in IP, optics, microwave, fixed access and wireless puts us in a relatively unique position amongst the other vendors in the market, and places us in an ideal position to address the mobile backhaul challenge with the introduction of small cell deployments,” said Philippe Keryer, president of Alcatel-Lucent’s Networks Group.
