Samsung Research’s HyoungJin Choi has been appointed as the chair of the Coordination Group on IMT-2030 (6G) at the ITU-R Working Party 5D (WP 5D) meeting, held in Geneva, Switzerland from June 25 to July 2.
This marks HyoungJin Choi’s second tenure in a leadership role for 6G standardization, following his previous position as head of the 6G Vision Group from 2021 to 2023.
The Coordination Group’s responsibilities include defining the development process for 6G technology standards, creating submission templates for candidate technologies, and reviewing proposals. The ITU-R’s IMT-2030 Framework Recommendation, released in November 2023, outlines the future direction for 6G, with the goal of establishing technical performance requirements by 2026.
These requirements will guide the development of 6G technologies by standards organizations such as the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), which will later submit their proposals to the ITU-R for evaluation and coordination. Final technical specifications for 6G are expected by 2030.
The IMT-2030 Framework provides key performance indicators, usage scenarios, and a roadmap for the standardization, spectrum allocation, and commercialization of 6G. As the industry moves towards detailed standardization efforts, competition among countries and companies to set 6G communication standards, including performance requirements and frequency bands, is expected to intensify.
