Number of 5G connections reaches 2.25 bn worldwide

The number of 5G connections in 2024 has reached 2.25 billion worldwide, according to 5G Americas and Omdia.

The number of Internet of Things (IoT) has reached 3.6 billion, adding 438 million new connections in 2024.

The number of 5G connections will reach 8.3 billion by 2029, representing 59 percent of all global wireless technologies.

North America has 289 million 5G connections in 2024, representing 67 percent increase from 196 million connections at the end of 2023.

North America has 77 percent 5G coverage.

Latin America has 76 million 5G connections in 2024 year-end—up from 38.5 million in 2023. While 5G expansion accelerates, 4G LTE remains the dominant technology, with 593 million users, accounting for 74 percent of all wireless connections in the Latin America region.

There are 354 commercial 5G networks globally as against 706 LTE networks as of March 17, 2025. North America has 18 5G networks and 18 LTE networks. In Europe, 5G deployments have reached 72 percent of LTE networks. In Latin America and Caribbean, there are 53 5G networks and 134 LTE networks.
