FIFA World Cup 2026 became one of the biggest digital sporting events in history, generating unprecedented online engagement while pushing global telecom operators to significantly expand broadband, fiber, 5G, and network capacity to support billions of video streams and massive Internet traffic.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 final set a new U.S. soccer viewership record as nearly 63 million Americans watched Spain defeat Argentina 1-0 after an extra-time goal in the 106th minute. Fox’s English-language broadcast attracted 38.9 million viewers, while Comcast’s Telemundo and Peacock delivered another 23.9 million, far surpassing the 22.3 million U.S. viewers who watched the 2022 World Cup final.
Round of 16 match between England and Mexico also drew nearly 45 million viewers, outperforming the 27 million who watched Game 7 of Major League Baseball’s World Series and the 25 million audience for Game 5 of the NBA Finals, although still below the 126 million viewers for Super Bowl LX, Reuters news report said.
The tournament proved highly profitable for broadcasters. Fox and Comcast reportedly paid approximately $485 million and $600 million, respectively, for media rights packages that included the World Cup. Fox One added 2.8 million subscribers in June, more than double the 1.1 million gained during the NFL Playoffs in January.
A 30-second advertising slot during knockout-stage matches sold for as much as $1 million, more than double 2018 levels, while comparable Super Bowl commercials cost around $8 million or more. New hydration breaks created additional advertising inventory, with Fox expected to generate at least $250 million in advertising revenue from those breaks alone.
According to FIFA, the tournament generated 20 billion video views across digital platforms by the quarter-final stage, including 14.5 billion views on TikTok and YouTube alone. Social media also recorded 30 billion impressions and 1.7 billion engagements, representing dramatic growth compared with the FIFA World Cup 2022. Social media impressions increased 130 percent, engagement rose 160 percent, and video views surged 485 percent versus the same stage of the previous tournament.
FIFA’s official digital platforms experienced record demand. During the group stage, FIFA.com attracted 130 million unique visitors, while the FIFA World Cup mobile application reached 30 million unique users, a 130 percent increase from the 2022 tournament. FIFA added 39 million new social media followers, including 16 million on TikTok and 5 million on YouTube, highlighting the rapid migration of football audiences toward digital and streaming platforms. FIFA is yet to share the final statistics on digital viewership.
Behind this digital success was one of the largest communications infrastructure deployments ever built for a sporting event. FIFA deployed more than 161,000 km (100,000 miles) of fiber-optic cable, enough to circle the Earth four times. Tournament and broadcast networks transported 13 million gigabytes (13 petabytes) of data using 4,000 network devices, 10,000 video distribution endpoints, and a private 5G network across all 16 stadiums to support broadcast operations, referee cameras, media production, and fan connectivity. More than 5,000 radios were deployed, while 2,600 spectrum requests were approved to ensure reliable wireless communications throughout the tournament. Over 1 billion cyber threats were successfully mitigated during the event.
Telecom operators also made substantial investments to prepare for unprecedented mobile broadband demand.
Verizon, as FIFA’s Official Telecommunications Services Sponsor, expanded network capacity at every U.S. host stadium by three to five times through additional 5G spectrum deployment. The operator installed thousands of under-seat antennas and specialized stadium antennas to improve coverage in upper seating areas, anticipating that spectators would consume more than 50 terabytes of mobile data per match through live streaming, video uploads, social media sharing, digital ticketing, and mobile payments.
The network investments translated into record traffic during the tournament. Verizon reported carrying nearly 500 terabytes of mobile data across all U.S. FIFA stadiums during the tournament, while the final alone generated 29.2 terabytes of traffic. Uplink traffic increased nearly 70 percent during the halftime show as fans uploaded photos and videos in real time, illustrating how modern sporting events increasingly depend on high-capacity broadband infrastructure.
AT&T has powered connectivity for nine matches at AT&T Stadium, the highest among all tournament venues, while preparing its network for approximately 4 million spectators visiting North Texas.
AT&T Stadium recorded its highest mobile data usage during the Australia vs. Egypt match with 28.7 terabytes of traffic, equivalent to more than 5.7 million social media posts. During the Jordan vs. Argentina match, fans generated 25.9 terabytes of data as Argentina’s captain set the all-time individual goals record.
To support the tournament, AT&T upgraded network capacity across 11 U.S. host cities, preparing for 2-3 times normal traffic levels while providing connectivity at 146 venues, including stadiums, airports, fan festivals, and team base camps. The operator coordinated operations through a centralized command center with on-site technical teams across major transportation hubs and event locations.
Since 2023, AT&T has invested more than $430 million in network infrastructure, completed over 1,500 network enhancement projects, and handled more than 1 billion network connections during the tournament. The company also established a dedicated FirstNet Operations Center in Dallas to provide 24×7 support for first responders throughout the FIFA World Cup.
T-Mobile US stepped up network investments ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 by strengthening mobile capacity, automation, and resilience across host cities rather than becoming an official tournament sponsor. The operator upgraded its nationwide 5G infrastructure with additional spectrum, cell sites, transport capacity, and AI-driven network optimization to handle the surge in traffic expected from millions of fans, international visitors, and large public gatherings. A key part of the investment was Dynamic CX, an AI-powered capability built on T-Mobile’s Self-Organizing Network (SON) platform that automatically detects major events and adjusts network resources in near real time to maintain performance during periods of heavy demand.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 highlighted how global sporting events are increasingly driven by digital consumption rather than traditional television alone. With 20 billion online video views, 30 billion social impressions, and telecommunications networks carrying 13 petabytes of tournament data while operators expanded 5G and fiber infrastructure, the event demonstrated that broadband capacity and Internet speed have become as essential to fan experience as the matches themselves.
