Wireless data subscribers grow to 373 million in India in Q2 2011

By Telecom Lead Team: The number of wireless data
subscribers has gone up to 373 million in quarter ended September 2011 from
274.05 million in the same quarter in 2010.

 

Wireless data user base stood at 346.67 million in
quarter ended June 2011.

 

42.79 percent of total wireless subscribers base are
capable of accessing data services/Internet at the end of September 2011 as
against 40.70 percent at the end of previous quarter, according to TRAI.

 

There are 20.99 million Internet subscribers at the end
of September 2011 as compared to 20.33 million at the end of June 2011,
registering a growth of 3.25 percent. Apart from this, 373.84 million wireless
subscribers have subscribed to data services, as reported by the wireless
service providers.

 

Number of broadband subscribers increased from 12.35
million at the end of June 2011 to 12.83 million at the end of September 2011,
registering a quarterly growth of 3.93 percent and y-o-y growth of 24.54
percent.

 

Share of broadband subscription in total Internet
subscription increased from 60.7 percent at the end of June 2011 to 61.1
percent at the end of September 2011.

 

Number of Narrowband subscribers increased from 7.98
million at the end of June 2011 to 8.16 million at the end of September 2011,
showing a growth rate of 2.21 percent as against a growth rate of 2.49 percent
in the previous quarter.

 

The total Internet leased line customers stood at 49,476
at the end of September 2011 as compared to 46,625 at the end of June 2011,
registering an increase of about 6.11 percent.

 

Total wireless (GSM + CDMA) subscriber base increased
from 851.70 million at the end of June 2011 to 873.61 million at the end of
September 2011, showing a growth of 2.57 percent. During this quarter 21.92
million subscribers were added. The year-on-year growth rate of wireless
subscribers for September 2011 is 27.03 percent. Wireless teledensity increased
from 71.11 to 72.70.
