Vodafone Idea, the third largest telecom operator in India, earlier revealed that its 4G population coverage increased by 41 million and stands at 1.07 billion at the end of December 2024.

Vodafone Idea had 126 million 4G subscriber at the end of last year. Vodafone Idea has enhanced 4G data capacity by ~24 percent and 4G speeds by ~28 percent in December 2024 vs March 2024.

Vodafone Idea aims to achieve 4G population coverage target of 1.1 billion by March 2025 and plans to further increase it to 1.2 billion i.e. ~90 percent of population.

Earlier, Vodafone Idea said the phased rollout of 5G services is underway, targeting key geographies across the country. Vodafone Idea today did not reveal its update on 5G availability in key cities. Earlier, Vodafone Idea said the commercial launch of 5G services in Mumbai is planned for March 2025 and Delhi, Bangalore, Chandigarh and Patna for April 2025.

Vodafone Idea says telecom equipment maker Nokia is supplying its 5G and 4G baseband and radio modules for the phased rollout of 5G services in key markets.

“2025 marks a significant milestone for Vi as it prepares its mobile network for launching commercial 5G services in March. Nokia, serving as the 5G technology solution provider, has completed all equipment deliveries. The deployment is progressing rapidly,” Vodafone Idea said in a statement.

By March 2025, Nokia is set to deliver over 60K technology sites and thousands of 4G sites. Additionally, ultra-lean sites are being deployed to improve service experience in dense, urban areas. Nokia achieved fast delivery and deployment of 5G and 4G sites for Vi, said Tarun Chhabra, Sr. Vice President & Country Head, Nokia India.
