TIM Brasil gears up for FIFA world cup traffic, taps Nokia Siemens for 4G

Telecom Lead America: TIM Brasil has selected Nokia Siemens Networks to build 4G LTE network.

Nokia Siemens’ Single RAN will help the telecom operator, which is expecting its service revenue to grow this year after a challenging end to 2012, to deliver mobile broadband services for upcoming Football Cup events in Brazil.

The second-largest wireless phone company has selected Nokia Siemens Networks to deploy an LTE network layer on top of the operator’s existing 2G and 3G networks in the 2.6 GHz frequency band.

TIM Brasil is planning to invest $5.4 billion (BRL10.7 billion) over the next three years, despite a recent slowdown in the country’s mobile market. The operator invested BRL3.4 billion in 2012.

Marco di Costanzo, Head of Mobile Network, TIM Brasil, said: “Our partnership with Nokia Siemens Networks has been excellent, and the 2G and 3G equipment installed by the company is performing so well that it was a natural decision to deploy an LTE network with the same vendor.”

Nokia Siemens will deliver an LTE radio access network featuring its Flexi Multiradio Base Stations, a Single RAN base station for GSM, 3G, FDD-LTE and TD-LTE.

Leveraging the Single RAN Flexi Multiradio Base Station, TIM Brasil can upgrade its site to 2.6 GHz LTE while saving time, space and power consumption – all translating to lower capital costs for the operator.

Implementation of the LTE network will be done on a city-by-city basis in preparation for the Confederations Cup 2013 and Football World Cup 2014 events.

At present, TIM Brasil has 70.3 million subscribers. Market leader Vivo which has 76 million subscribers.
