Telefonica Germany has extended its partnership with Nokia through a five-year agreement that runs until 2030, focused on modernizing the operator’s radio access network.

The centerpiece of this collaboration is Nokia’s advanced Cloud RAN technology, which will accelerate Telefonica’s 5G expansion, support sustainable digitalization across Germany, and elevate customer experience. The move aligns with Telefonica’s strategy to apply AI driven tools to strengthen network performance and streamline operations.
As part of the agreement, Nokia will deliver its energy efficient and AI ready AirScale RAN portfolio. This includes Habrok Massive MIMO radios for the n78 spectrum band, Pandion multi band remote radio heads, and AirScale Radio small cells designed to enhance indoor connectivity and boost overall coverage. Nokia will also supply its baseband solutions to enhance Telefonica’s 5G network reliability and performance at scale.
The deployment features Nokia’s Interleaved Passive Active Antenna, IPAA plus, which simplifies site design, reduces deployment complexity, and helps speed up the 5G rollout. The agreement also includes ongoing maintenance and network optimization services to ensure sustained high performance.
Telefonica Germany will continue to utilize Nokia’s AI powered network management platform, MantaRay NM. The solution supports both purpose built RAN and Cloud RAN architectures, integrating data center hardware and cloud infrastructure. It enables unified operation and maintenance across core, radio, and transport networks, managing both physical and virtualized network elements. This forms a foundational step toward achieving automation level four, a shared goal for both companies, powered by next generation AI orchestration capabilities.
Nokia President and CEO Justin Hotard said the companies are working together to strengthen network performance, efficiency, and user experience while preparing Telefonica for long term competitiveness in the AI driven era.
Matthias Sauder, Director Networks at O2 Telefonica, emphasized that Nokia’s continued role reflects the operators commitment to delivering top tier 5G experiences and driving a more connected and sustainable future for Germany.
