Uninor offers free Internet to access Wikipedia for 3-months

Indian telecom service provider Uninor is offering free Internet access to Wikipedia for its Internet subscribers on their mobile devices for 3-months.

The new initiative is part of Telenor Group’s Internet for All strategy.

As part of the free Internet program, Uninor employees will engage with students and teachers to create awareness on digital literacy with special focus on Wikipedia in the rural areas.

Vivek Sood, CEO, Telewings Communications Services (Uninor), said: “It is in line with our Internet for All strategy and an extension of our Sabse Sasta proposition for relevant content for the mass market.”

In 2012, Telenor offered free Internet to access Wikipedia through a partnership with the Wikimedia Foundation. Telenor Business units in Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar and Montenegro have also launched similar programs.

Uninor aims to have 50 percent of its users on Internet by 2017. The free access to Wikipedia will be available for three months starting April 1, 2015.

Last year, Uninor introduced service-based plans for Facebook and WhatsApp for its subscribers.
