Telecom Lead America: T-Mobile US is slashing additional
900 jobs. Earlier this year, the U.S. operator decided to cut 1,900 jobs.
The operator is also closing seven call centers, cutting
about 5 percent of its roughly 36,000-strong workforce.
The seven centers employed about 3,300 people. The
company said at the time that it would offer transfers to employees of the
shuttered call centers, as it planned to add 1,400 jobs at its remaining 17
centers.
T-Mobile USA is spending $4 billion to upgrade its
network.
The operator is looking to preserve cash for
investment in its network after its proposed $39 billion purchase by AT&T
Inc failed late last year due to regulatory opposition.
Last year, AT&T and Deutsche Telekom
AG decided to end AT&T’s bid to acquire T-Mobile USA in a $39 billion deal.
T-Mobile set to receive spectrum from AT&T
T-Mobile USA will soon be receiving a big chunk of
spectrum from AT&T, the No. 2 U.S. mobile service provider, as the latter
operator has got regulatory approval from FCC.
The spectrum will be given as part of AT&T break-up
offering in compensation for the failure of their efforts to merge.
The move will provide T-Mobile with Advanced Wireless
Systems (AWS) spectrum in 128 cellular markets, including 12 of the top 20,
T-Mobile said in a statement.
