Sprint, owned by SoftBank of Japan, is the fourth largest telecom operator in the US. Sprint unveiled the world’s first all-wireless small cell with several innovative features.

Sprint Magic Box — manufactured by Airspan Networks — is the world’s first all-wireless small cell, which improves data coverage and increases download and upload speeds by 200 percent. This self-configuring small cell provides indoor coverage averaging up to 30,000 square feet.

Customers can place the small cell unit near a window and plug into a power outlet. Within minutes, customers will experience better indoor coverage. Wireless customer can experience nearly 200 percent increase in download and upload data speeds.

Magic Box simplifies network densification by using LTE UE Relay for wireless backhaul, and by connecting to macro sites at the cell edge it decongests network traffic. Sprint has addressed the small cell deployment issues around speed, ease and cost.

The company recently hit a milestone of more than 200,000 Sprint Magic Boxes distributed to businesses and consumers in more than 200 cities.

“Our breakthrough Sprint Magic Box technology continues to be recognized for its innovation, ease of deployment and cost-efficiency in expanding and improving LTE coverage indoors,” said John Saw, chief technology officer at Sprint. “Magic Box is another important way that we’ve made the Sprint Network experience better for our customers.”

Sprint posted sequential growth in wireless service revenue for the first time in more than four years, as post-paid and pre-paid ARPU grew sequentially. Sprint’s post-paid ARPU grew sequentially for the first time in nearly five years. Sprint’s pre-paid service revenue grew both sequentially and year-over-year.

Sprint is densifying its network by deploying more small cells – including Sprint Magic Boxes – to improve coverage, reliability and speed for consumers and businesses in cities across the US.
