Telecom Lead Asia: Vietnamese telecom market is expected
to have 132.373 million mobile subscribers by the end of 2016, up from 122.304
million in 2012, according to Research and Markets.
The research study noted that the Vietnamese mobile
sector is experiencing slow growth, which could be ascribed to market
saturation.
However, the growth in wireless segment has released some
pressure on the fixed-line market, which is already declining and expected to
plunge at 13.035 million subscribers in 2016.
The study revealed that the Vietnamese telecoms industry
will remain relatively unattractive in the short term due to the dominance of
state-owned entities in a highly competitive landscape.
Vietnamese companies have already launched 4G trials,
however, the Ministry of Information and Communications announced in February
2012 that 4G services will be put on hold until 2018 to allow mobile operators
to recover their investments on 3G technology.
The country’s draft national strategy on telecoms
developments, however, has called for commercial 4G services in 2015.
For its study, the research firm analyzed Alcatel-Lucent,
Vietnam Posts & Telecommunications (VNPT), Viettel, MobiFone,
VinaPhone, S-Fone (S-Telecom), EVN Telecom and FPT Telecom.
