India sets up committee for improve telecom network during disasters

India Government has set up a committee under the IT ministry to come up with suggestions for improving the telecommunication network during disasters.

During a meeting chaired by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, it was discussed that India should set up a robust telecommunication system that would withstand natural disasters.

The decision to set up a strong telecom network follows the break-down of telecom network by mobile service providers such as Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular, Aircel, Vodafone, BSNL, Reliance Communications, etc during the Jammu & Kashmir floods.

Lack of communication significantly impacted the rescue operations in J&K.

In a tweet, India’s home minister said: “We reviewed the functioning of telecommunication network during disasters with the Union Telecommunication Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.”

American government and several key operators spent millions on improving network to support communication during disaster.

In April 2014, American telecom industry association 4G Americas said that spectrum auction proceeds from a paired 1.7/2.1 GHz auction would better meet U.S. government’s goal of deficit reduction and upgrading Public Safety Access Points so they can accept Next Generation 911 services.
