Healthcare veteran Mark T. Bertolini joins Verizon Board of Directors

Verizon Communications has elected Mark T. Bertolini, chairman and chief executive officer of Aetna, to the Verizon Board of Directors, effective February 5.

The addition of Bertolini brings Verizon’s total board membership to 12, the company said in a statement.

Bertolini has extensive experience in the healthcare industry, which is an area of increasing importance to Verizon’s business strategy, said Lowell McAdam, Verizon chairman and chief executive officer.

Bertolini joined Aetna in 2003 as head of Aetna’s Specialty Products. He served as executive vice president and head of Aetna’s regional businesses prior to being named president.In 2007 he was named president and in that role was responsible for all of Aetna’s businesses and operations.

Prior to joining Aetna, Bertolini held executive positions at Cigna, NYLCare Health Plans and SelectCare, where he served as president and chief executive officer.
