China Mobile claims to launch 47 3G handsets for TD-SCDMA

Telecom Lead ASIA: China Mobile has announced that it has
launched 47 mobile phone models have been launched since the beginning of the
year for TD-SCDMA.

The operator claimed that this breakthrough figure of
mobile phones launched for TD-SCDMA is an achievement for them, as it consists
of 32 smartphones.

TD-SCDMA is one of China’s homegrown 3G technologies.
China Mobile has adopted this 3G technology for its operations across China.

China Mobile is the largest mobile operator by number of
users in the world. The operator said that it works with 250 mobile phone
manufacturers to bring new handsets in the market for its customers.

However, analysts and market observers believe that
TD-SCDMA is losing ground in the 3G segment. The other 3G technologies are
WCDMA used by China Unicom and the CDMA2000 being used by China Telecom.

The operator is falling behind in terms of the number of
terminals and the availability of chipsets. However, Li Huidi, vice-president
of China Mobile Communications Corp, Li said that the operator is working with
eight chipset makers that are now able to provide TD chipsets.

In addition, Qualcomm Inc, a smartphone chipset supplier
is about to launch a series of TD chipsets this year.

The company has also revealed that it would consider
prioritizing partnerships with mobile phone makers that launch TD versions of
cell phones first.
