Nokia signs patent license agreement with HP

Nokia has signed a multi-year patent license agreement with PC major HP, allowing HP to use Nokia’s video technologies in its devices. This agreement includes royalty payments from HP to Nokia.

The agreement resolves all ongoing patent litigation between Nokia and HP in all jurisdictions, bringing an end to previous disputes. In 2023, Nokia started patent infringement proceedings against HP. There were 14 patents in suit, covering video coding technologies implemented in HP’s products. Nokia also took legal measures against Amazon for unauthorized use of Nokia’s video-related technologies.

HP generated revenue of $53.7 billion in 2023, with its PC business contributing $35.442 billion and its printing business contributing $18.258 billion. HP website says its worldwide patent portfolio included over 23,000 patents at October 31, 2023.

Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies, is responsible for managing Nokia’s patent portfolio and monetizing Nokia’s intellectual property including patents, technologies and the Nokia brand. Nokia annual report says it made an investment of €150 billion between 2000-2023.

Nokia Technologies has reported sales revenue of €1.085 billion in 2023 as compared with €1.595 billion in 2022 and €1.5 billion in 2021.

Specific terms of the agreement have not been disclosed, as both companies agreed to keep them confidential.

Nokia has been a longstanding innovator in multimedia, with around 5,000 inventions and an R&D investment of approximately €150 billion since 2000, including €4 billion in 2023, covering video compression, content delivery, and multimedia hardware.

Nokia has filed over 2,300 new inventions and achieved 6,000 patent families deemed essential to the 5G standard.

Nokia has signed 50+ new patent licenses, including major agreements with Apple and Samsung.

Nokia extended licensing efforts to include video streaming technology. Nokia’s voice codec chosen by the 3GPP as the standard for Immersive Voice and Audio Services.
