Nawras picks Huawei for network modernization project

Telecom Lead Middle East: Oman’s communications provider
Nawras has selected Huawei for its network modernization and managed services.

Huawei has been selected as the preferred bidder for
network modernization and managed services following a comprehensive tender
process.

The ultimate agreement will have Huawei providing Nawras’
Radio Access Network (RAN) and undertaking a modernization of the RAN so that
it is optimally designed to accommodate anticipated developments including the
launch of LTE.

Furthermore, both companies intend to sign an agreement
covering managed services for both the fixed and mobile networks, which will
advance efficiency further.

However, final details of the contract are still to be
negotiated. Capital expenditure on the upgraded radio network and related
transmission equipment is anticipated to amount to a total investment of high
double-digit million Omani Rials over the next three years.

With this modernization, Nawras customers will benefit
from improved service speed and quality thereby enhancing the customer
experience on every level.

The communication provider said the modernization process
marks the beginning of a powerful new radio technology.

Huawei has considerable experience gained from building
commercialized LTE networks for many of the world’s leading telcos, including
the world’s first and fastest LTE network.

Recently, Saudi Telecom (STC) selected Huawei’s metro WDM products, with PID (Photonic
Integrated Device) technology for its metro WDM networks in Saudi
Arabia. Also,
Wataniya Telecom deployed Huawei’s Internet
Cache solution on Wataniya Telecom’s Networks Infrastructure.

Oman’s telecom sector revenue rises, as Omantel and
Nawras shows growth

Nawras continued to show growth in terms of revenue as well as subscriber base
for the financial year 2011. However, stiff competition and increase in
operating expenses have adversely impacted profitability of the company,
according to Oman Observer.
