MWC 2024: Huawei and China Unicom Unveil Breakthroughs in AI and Connectivity

Huawei and China Unicom have introduced collaborative achievements, including 5G-A, FTTR 3.0, and the AI foundation model — at MWC Barcelona 2024.
China Unicom 5G networkLiang Baojun, Deputy General Manager of China Unicom, elaborated on China Unicom’s journey towards unified communications and computing-powered digital intelligence businesses, highlighting the continuous enhancements in network capabilities, computing power, and AI foundation models.

He emphasized the importance of global collaboration in unleashing the potential of the digital and intelligent world. China Unicom has been actively driving the deployment of 5G-A pilot networks and sample sites, aiming to achieve 10 Gbps downlink and 1 Gbps intelligent uplink to enhance service assurance capabilities.

Li Peng, Senior Vice President of Huawei and President of Huawei ICT Sales & Service Dept, reiterated the longstanding collaboration between China Unicom and Huawei, emphasizing their commitment to innovation in the 5G era.

He affirmed Huawei’s support for China Unicom’s endeavors in network innovation, service enhancement, and ecosystem development. Looking ahead, Li expressed Huawei’s dedication to furthering innovation in 5G-A network technologies and scenario-based applications, with a focus on driving standards and business maturity.

Ma Hongbing, General Manager of China Unicom’s Science and Technology Innovation Dept, presented the innovation achievements, followed by keynote speeches from various industry representatives.

Ma Hongbing highlighted China Unicom’s technological advancements in areas such as ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC), RedCap, and passive IoT. He showcased the company’s achievements, including the completion of China’s first large-scale 5G-A networking showcase in Beijing.

Ma Hongbing emphasized the crucial role played by Huawei’s OptiXstar F50 product in supporting China Unicom’s FTTR 3.0 solution, which comprehensively upgrades the network, ecosystem, and terminal connections.

John Gao, President of the 5G-A Domain of Huawei Wireless Network Product Line, underscored the joint innovation efforts between Huawei and China Unicom, particularly in pioneering key 5G-A technologies such as URLLC and RedCap.

He highlighted that 2024 marks the inaugural year of 5G-A commercial use, with China Unicom leading the charge in establishing cutting-edge commercial networks with top-tier services and unparalleled user experiences, bolstered by Huawei’s support.

Ma Hongbing and Ma Hongbo, President of Huawei’s Wireless MAE Domain, signed the Wireless Network Open API Joint Innovation MoU, signaling a deeper collaboration between China Unicom and Huawei in exploring business opportunities related to the monetization of wireless network capabilities.
