Huawei Technologies India announced the appointment of William Zhao as the chief operating officer (COO) — responsible for expanding its R&D operations and driving new business.

William succeeds Wilson Wang, who will be joining Digital Services Development Management at Huawei, China, after a four-year stint at the Indian R&D center in Bangalore. Recently, Huawei celebrated 15 years of the R&D center in India.

With more than 3,000 Indian engineers and professionals, Huawei Technologies is the company’s first and largest R&D center outside of China, focused on developing ICT software, telecom solutions, consumer device software and providing professional services for global operators.

William will focus on strengthening ownership of products, establishing leadership in open source development & community contribution, enabling transformation in Software & Service domain and enhancing smartphone product ownership.

Huawei says William held several senior positions across different divisions in Huawei and has managed more than 100 projects all over the world in his more than 18 years’ career with Huawei.

He served as the director of a Product Development Unit in Carrier Software product line from 2013 to 2015. Prior to that, William was engaged in a range of functions in Core Network Department.
