Huawei to invest $500 mn in Ontario, Canada, over 5 years

Telecom network vendor Huawei will invest $500 million in Ontario, Canada, over the next 5 years.

Earlier, enterprise IT vendor Cisco announced its plans to invest in Canada.

As part of the expansion plans, Huawei will enhance Canadian R&D and business operations. Huawei is committing $210 million in new investments in Ontario, and will create 325 new jobs over the next 5 years. Huawei’s total investment in Ontario will be $500 million over the next 5 years.

Huawei will expand current R&D capabilities in Ontario by hiring 250 new engineers and researchers. The focus of research will be next generation communications, cloud and enterprise mobility.  Huawei will add nearly 75 employees to the sales, marketing and support functions at its Markham headquarters.

Sean Yang, president of Huawei Canada, said: “Since 2010, Huawei’s Canada Research Centre has established itself as one of the global leaders in advanced communications technologies, including 5G.”

The company now employs approximately 550 people in Canada. Over 95 percent of its workforce is based in Ontario, with 250 of those employees focused on R&D at the Canada Research Centre in Ottawa. Huawei has also worked with a number of Canadian Universities, and has invested over $4 million with research institutions over the past 4 years.
