Bezeq taps DDN for SaaS-based Cloud storage service

DDN said Bezeq, a telecom service provider in Israel, has selected its Web Object Scaler (WOS), a storage platform, for its Storage-as-a-Service (SaaS) Cloud storage service.

Through the SaaS model, Bezeq aims to offer free cloud services to customers to store photos, music, videos and documents.
WOS storage platform will enable Bezeq to cost-effectively manage petabytes of unstructured Big Data. WOS technology enables Bezeq to store billions of objects on the same platform accessible via a single federated global namespace.

Following the deployment of DDN’s WOS platform, Bezeq achieved savings in storage costs and administrative overhead by producing the highest utilization per square meter in its datacenter, while requiring minutes to set up and maintain WOS storage nodes.

DDN’s WOS platform supports Bezeq to leverage a single storage pool to meet its needs without the expense of deploying and managing a separate, dedicated backup storage infrastructure.

Igal Muginstein, Operations, Systems, Storage and Backup Team Leader, IT and Engineering Departments for Bezeq, said: “The flexibility to use DDN’s WOS technology for multiple purposes will allow us to be more competitive in delivering new, customer-focused services. With DDN, we achieved faster time to market and expedited ROI on value-added customer services.”

Bezeq revenues for the first quarter of 2015 fell 5.9 percent to NIS 2.17 billion — primarily due to lower revenues at Pelephone which was partially mitigated by increased revenues of Bezeq Fixed-Line and Bezeq International.

The Capex (capital spending) of Bezeq in the first quarter of 2015 increased 16.8 percent to NIS 368 million compared with NIS 315 million in the corresponding quarter of 2014. The telecom operator invested in the nationwide rollout of fiber optic network for fixed line business and for enhancing the NGN.

Bezeq added 26,000 broadband Internet lines, amounting to a total of 1.39 million. This number includes 11,000 broadband Internet lines through Bezeq’s wholesale service for telecom operators
